. >> and in his press conference, president obama quoted speaker john boehner from 2011. >> that would be a financial disaster, not only for our country but for the worldwide economy. i don't think it is a question that is even on the table. >> and the last question of his press conference, the president was asked if he may be more successful with some of the nuts you just heard from if he spent more quality time with them. >> you and your staff are too insular, that you don't socialize enough. >> this, of course, is one of the great myths of governing, that intractable problems, political problems, can somehow be solved over a card game and a couple of drinks. that has never, ever been the case nor will it ever be the case. >> i like speaker boehner personally. and you know, when we went out and played golf we had a great time. but that didn't get a deal done in 2011. >> the president actually had to remind the media that congressional behavior is the result of democracy. >> now if the american people feel strongly about these issues and they push hard and they reward, or don't reward

that this speech is going to sort of deal with some of the broader themes that president obama talked about on the campaign trail. he's going to talk about the need for the country to come together. we'll probably reiterate his call to sort of get rid of sort of partisan divides that have been sort of creating so much trouble here in washington. so that will be a big theme. and he might talk about some of his larger policy initiatives like immigration reform and gun control reform, but he's not going to get into a whole lot of specifics. i think you're absolutely right. he's going to kind of touch on the broader themes of all those points. >> i can't wait to see what dress the first lady will be wearing on monday night. kristin welker, thank you so much. we'll see you monday. >> reporter: thanks. i look forward to that, too. thanks, karen. >> we'll be right back. need for protein increases, yet many of us don't meet our daily protein needs? that's why there's boost® high protein nutritional drink. each delicious serving provides fifteen grams of protein to help maintain muscle and help mee

can't govern the country that way. >> the question is how did you -- the problem is that compromise cannot be unilaterally imposed. this is the fundamental conundrum of the obama era right? >> chris, that was the message of the last election. we've had an opportunity to meet with the republicans. they got the message, too. it's time for collaboration. time for cooperation. >> right. >> their leadership has not gotten that. >> political class, the elite of the political class, the leadership on the republican side that doesn't want their members to do what they need to do to stay, you know, really listening to their constituents. >> i know your district. all right? i spent time in madison, wisconsin. >> it is a very strong, progressive district. >> you replaced tammy baldwin who is now amazingly a united states, a friend, colleague of yours. i know that district. okay? if you are on a bill that this cosponsored with eric cantor, whatever it is, someone is going to come in and primary you or someone is going to come in and threaten to primary you or run ads or you'll go home to the fo

final press conference of his first presidential term president obama went on offense warning republicans not to play politics with the debt ceiling. here is some of what he had to say. >> raising the debt ceiling does not authorize more spending. it simply allows the country to pay for spending that congress has already committed to. if congressional republicans refuse to pay america's bills on time, social security checks and veterans' benefits will be delayed. we might not be able to pay our troops our honor our contracts with small business owners. markets could go haywire, interest rates would spike for anybody who borrows money, every home own we are a mortgage. it would be a self-inflicted wound on the economy. so to even entertain the idea of this happening, of the united states of america not paying its bills, is irresponsible. it's absurd. >> well, the president hass got to get past the debt ceiling in order to achieve his second term agenda but how does he do it when some republicans are threatening shutdown. chuck todd and howard fineman. chuck, you know, i get the
